Swaddling, Feeding, the dos, the don'ts, the doodoo and the diaper change.

Tonight we attended our first newborn care class and it was a bit of a hoot.  The one funny remark that had me laughing for a few minutes was the African American couple who answered the question our instructor asked, "what do you think your baby's color should be????"  I paused a second and the couple immediately said "black!" and the whole room, including mother, exploded with laughter.  I think it was what you call an "ice breaker"...well it broke, and the video started rolling and nipples starting appearing and babies were being delivered vaginally, and the sensory overload began to develop.  Maybe not just sensory overload but the reality of our situation started really settling in.  Our daughter is coming SOON!

Anyway, we ended with a bathing, diapering and swaddling session and Bill was doing a pretty good job, don't you think?  I was the hired photographer.  The class was fun but a little long, and I'm happy that there's only one more before we head out to DC on April 26th!

Bill can roll a baby burrito with the best of them!!!

  1. Those classes are painfully long! I remember our first time in 1997 - I thought I was gonna die it was so long, and kinda boring! The fun parts are definitly learning the basics. Now you are ready! Just five weeks to go! You must be so excited, so anxious!

    1. Oh and Kerrie, to boot it was from 6-9 pm and it ran over until 9:30...I was yawning half way through. But yes, SUPER EXCITED and a bit like "where'd the time go???"

  3. Bill looks like such a pro! Do you get to keep the photography position once the baby is born, or will you be required to participate at that time? Not long now!!!

    1. If you haven't noticed yet, Bill is my subject. He's much better looking than me, and is much more of a perfectionist than me, so I thought it apropos to feature the best! Not long now at all...CRAZY!

    1. Yes, especially the birthing video where the mother pulls her daughter out on her own. I'm not hoping for that yoga move when we're in delivery! :-)

  6. Those classes are awesome and do wonders to connect you to what's about to happen!!!! ....Although I felt like ours was focused on the things NOT to do and all the ways a baby could be in danger...may well have been titled 'here are 346 reasons why you will fail as a parent'....
P.S. A good swaddle will serve you VERY well!!!! Keep practicing.

    1. Swaddle, swaddle, swaddle! We're working on it.
And yes, the classes are a bit of a scare tactic so we came home and threw away everything in the nursery :-)

    1. Since Billy boy will be the stay-at-home dad for at least a year, I felt it was my duty to record the event and make sure he was following the instructions! :-) I'll get one of me at the next class!

  8. I loved those classes! Tony almost passed out from all of the stimuli. Even though he's a firefighter medic he couldnt quite fathom the idea of HIS baby coming out of one of those LOL.
